![]() The new Nokia N95 was one of the most successful handsets of its time, now its predecessor N96 has to live up to a lot of expectation from the public. The N95 and now N96 has been one of the most anticipated phones in the market even though there wasn’t much hype surrounding it is was for the iphone. The phone itself is very expensive and is costing around $1300 USD at the time of writing this. It has been said that the N96 will probably a bestseller model and it is evident that the name would sell the successor even it was repackaged and sold. The width and height of the N96 has increased but it is 3mm slimmer than it’s predecessor N95 8 GB which isn’t much. . There is one more reason to this: the sliding front cover is not such a slim piece of plastic anymore, but it’s a much more massive thing. N96 has got a huge display screen and I critics think the QVGA resolution might even be a bit too low for the 2.8” diagonal. The navigation key have got a proper size and the functions along with other keys are well disturbed on the two side. Around the navigation ring there are the multimedia control keys with a discrete backlight, while on the right there is a dedicated silvery key that takes us to the multimedia menu ![]() There is also a secondary camera which is very important for video calling and taking self pictures. The cover has got a new shiny black surface which allows smudges all over the N96. The new Symbian 9.3 works well and it also had feature pack 2. The N96’s software is highly customizable as other nokia phones. You can easily put the phone on Active or standby from sliding from the side. The N96’s software is so easy to use that the only thing it misses is the touch screen support. Funnily enough the N96 has a weaker CPU than N95. It lacks the 3D accelerator modules and works on a 264 MHZ Dual ARM 9 CPU. It seems nokia is trying to save cost for its production of the N96. But the good news is that it doesn’t affect the speed of the phone and works fine with applications running in the background. Well actually it took a lot of time for the N96 to launch games and to put the list of available pictures, music and videos together. Also the launch of Nokia maps takes a bit of time as well. The motion sensor is fast, we have to tilt the phone to the right in order to activate it and it accustoms the displayed picture to the handset’s changed position at almost every point of the menu system. The phone book of the N96 has got unlimited capacity and you can define the number and extra information assigned to each contact without any limits. Overall the phonebook has all the features one would expect from a modern phone. The messaging system of the N96 is really good. You can send SMS, MMS and Emails as well. The email client is really powerful and supports a lot of features. The call volume and quality is pretty good as well. It is not too soft and there weren’t any distortions. The hands free option isn’t the best out there but it does the job without any distortion. A great feature with the N96 is you can record all your calls in progress. (this may be illegal in many countries without the other party knowing). The N96 has got a 5 megapixel camera like the N95 and the settings are basically the same. There focusing and exposure of the are N96 are fast and the storing of images doesn’t take too much time either. The flash isn’t that great for large area and the camera sound can not be turned off. There isn’t any optical zoom for the camera either. The N96 comes with Nokia Maps 2.0 navigation software and it is good for pedestrian use and not that suitable for motor vehicle usage. You are better of buying a car navigation solution for your car. GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, WLAN and Wi Fi are the connection types you get with Nokia N96. You can easily connect to the internet and access the web thru its built in web browser. N96 can be connected with an RCA cable to a TV or a projector, just like its predecessor. The N96 also has microUSB cable and Bluetooth for transferring data. The N96 comes with a BL-5F battery and it has a capacity of 950 mAh. It can play up to 14 hours of music in offline mode and much leaser which you are connected to the network. I think Nokia should invest in a better battery next time.
